| Every Woman is a Mother Says Sister Dew |
| At the General Relief Society meeting Saturday
night, Sister Sheri L. Dew told the audience that every woman is a mother,
regardless of whether she has borne children. Sister Dew, second counselor
in the Relief Society General Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints, told the audience, "Motherhood is more than bearing
children. It is the essence of who we are as women. It defines our very
identity, our divine stature and nature, and the unique traits our Father
gave us." It is, Sister Dew taught, the nature of women to care for others,
to "mother" them. |

| Steeple Placement Ends Legal Challenges to Boston Temple |
| With the help of two giant cranes, a
construction crew and the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, a
gilded statue of the angel Moroni is firmly in place 139 feet atop
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint's Boston temple. The
12-foot-tall, 56-foot conical section reached its controversial place
in time for the temple's one-year anniversary, effectively ending the
legal challenges that have plagued the building since before its
construction. |

| Monticello Temple to be Expanded |
| The LDS Church plans to remodel and expand the
Monticello, Utah Temple starting next March, just three years after it was
dedicated. The first of the new "smaller" Temples dedicated, the Monticello
temple has proved too small for the demands of its temple district. |

| First Stake in Kenya |
| The first stake in the African nation of Kenya was
created last month by Elder Robert C. Oaks and Elder Steven E. Snow
of the Africa Southeast Area Presidency. Organized from the Kenya
Nairobi District in the Kenya Nairobi Mission, the new Nairobi Kenya
Stake includes five wards and two branches. |

| The NCAA eligibility rules are complex, and its
little wonder that a young kid from a small town could make an error tha
twould cost him a season of eligibility at an NCAA Division I-A school.
That's what has happened to Ryan Harris, backup quarterback for Western
Michigan's Broncos, all because he spent two weeks as a walk-on at Utah
State University seven years ago. |

| Ex-BYU Star's Life Reveals Problem of Pain Drugs |
| Former Brigham Young University football team
captain, Craig Garrick, died Sept.3 at the age of 41. LaVell Edwards
spoke at his funeral and reminded those in attendance how he had once
told Garrick's mother Janet, that Craig shouldn't play football
because of his bad knee, a knee that was so bad it would bow six
inches to the side with every step. "That's not an option," she
replied. "If he didn't play, he would die." |

| Utah Redistricting May Give Matheson Boost |
| The Republicans succeeded in remapping Democratic
Congressman Jim Matheson's district, dividing his democratic stronghold and
adding more republican territory. But Matheson, an LDS Church member like
the other Utah congressmen, is not going into political oblivion quietly.
And some analysts believe he may actually benefit from the changes. |

| 'New Era' to Drop Fiction |
| The New Era, the youth magazine published by
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will no longer
publish fiction, ending a practice of carrying stories in each issue
that has launched the careers of many LDS authors. A date for the
change to only non-fiction hasn't yet been set, but the decision to
make the change has been made. |

| Excel to Distribute Film About Elder Groberg |
| Filmmaker Mitch Davis has announced that his
forthcoming film on the missionary experiences of Elder John H.
Groberg, now a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy of The
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will be distributed by
Excel Theatrical Distribution. The announcement also indicated that
the much-anticipated film could be in theaters for Christmas. Excel
is the same company that distributed the breakthrough film "God's
Army." |
