Sports: Injuries Take Toll on Football Players

NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- A couple of Mormon football players will miss the rest of the season due to injuries. Greg Clark of the San Francisco 49ers has a problem with a hamstring while the Baltimore Ravens' Todd Heap has an ankle injury. Elsewhere, baseball's Jeff Kent had his best week in a while, and subscribers have identified a total of three Mormon hockey players ahead of the start of the season this week.

After a disastrous start with the Detroit Lions the previous week, LDS quarterback Ty Detmer had an off week as the Lions didn't play. The other LDS quarterbacks, Joe Germaine and Scott Mitchell are backups. Chad Lewis remains the best Mormon player on offense, including a great week Sunday where he scored two touchdowns for the Philadelphia Eagles. On defense, former BYU star Rob Morris is living up to his reputation, grabbing 7 tackles last week (2 solo), raising his total in three games to 20.

In baseball, Kent hit two home runs and captured 5 RBIs while earning a .476 batting average for the week, again nearly putting his average for the season at .300. Unfortunately, the Giants still face a tough road to make the post-season. Among pitchers, the Giants' Shawn Estes turned in the best starting performance, with a 2.57 ERA over 7 innings and a win, while the Cubs' Kyle Farnsworth gave the best relief, giving 4 innings of no-hit baseball over 4 games. But the other pitchers gave mediocre performances, or, as in the case of Jason Johnson, Omar Olivares and Dave Veres, over 9.0 ERA work.

In golf, former US Amateur champion Jeff Quinney, using another of his seven byes, tied for 41st in the Texas Open, earning a share of the purse in a PGA Tour event for the first time. He also bested Jay Don Blake (T51) and the other Mormons on the PGA tour, who were all cut. Richard Zokol on the Buy.com tour tied for 11th at the Inland Empire Open, while Bruce Summerhays tied for 51st in the Gold Rush Classic.

Meanwhile, Mormon News subscribers report that at least three Mormons are playing in the NHL: Len Barrie of the Florida Panthers; Aaron Garvey of the Minnesota Wild and Steve Konawalchuk of the Washington Capitals. In addition, Nashville Predators assistant coach Brent Peterson is LDS. Coverage of NHL statistics begins next week.
