Cheng-Sheng Pan, a Taiwanese student at Brigham Young University,
along with a handful of Utah Valley State College students, attempted to
reach relatives and friends. Phone lines have been down and it was
difficult to know if they were safe. "My friends cry and cry. I try to
comfort them," Schen-Sheng Pan said. "The difficult part is the
unknown. I was with them between ll and l:30 a.m. trying to comfort
them and trying to find out information."
Wulung Chang, a Taiwanese student from the University of Utah, is
studying seismology and hopes to return to his country to help predict
earthquakes in Taiwan. He spoke to his grandmother, who lives in a
rural area, and determined she was safe. Observers say the quake was
very shallow and radiated further causing more damage than typical
deeper quakes.
Dan Duckworth, will serve a mission for the LDS church in Taiwan in
December. "I was concerned," Duckworth said. "I was just thinking about
how that would change the aspect of my mission. I would like to have
been there when it was happening rather than on the tail end of it."
