Although they come from throughout the United States, the majority of
volunteers are from Utah. They represent a variety of skills, ages
and religions, participating as individuals, couples, and even as
families. One participant, Rebecca Cowden, of Salt Lake City, said
people feel they're serving their fellow man the way God wants them
to. The article relates many experiences that volunteers have had
working for the organization.
Many are impressed with the impact the program has on American
teenagers. Youth, in particular, are moved to tears when they
participate in these projects and realize what they have. Young
people often have a change of heart about how they deal with their
siblings, their parents and peers; some even change their career
paths to do something more beneficial to humanity."
Evans is also the founder of the Humanitarian Foundation of the Andes
another Salt Lake-based organization that arranges for volunteers to
work on projects in other countries. It specializes in projects in
Peru, particularly the Sacred Valley of the Incas, one of the poorest
areas of the world.
The following trips still have space for volunteers. Call Choice
Humanitarian at 801-474-1937 for more information. The deadline for
the Christmas holiday trips is Oct. 17: Senahu, Guatemala, Dec.
25-Jan. 5; Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, Dec. 20-Jan. 4; Gudalur, Tamil Nadu,
India, Feb. 12-28.
