Sports: Two Mormons Remaining in NBA Playoffs, Estes on DL

NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- Rookie Mark Madsen and the Milwaukee Buck's Mark Pope still remain as the only Mormon players left in the NBA's playoffs, and Madsen's Lakers are well on their way to reaching the finals, leading their series with the Spurs. Pope's Bucks start their series against Philadelphia tomorrow. However, neither Madsen nor Pope have played much in the post season.

Meanwhile, baseball players Wally Joyner and Jeff Kent again both had better-than-average (.300 or better) weeks, again raising their batting averages. Kent added four RBIs, bringing his total to 30, but struck out seven times during the week. The four active pitchers who are Mormon, meanwhile, were reduced to three, as Shawn Estes was put on the disabled list, retroactive to May 9th, making him available again later this week. The other three had a poor week, Omar Olivares managing a mediocre six innings, giving up three runs, while relief pitchers, Kyle Farnsworth and Mike Fetters, both gave up nearly an earned run an inning.

On the Senior PGA Tour, pro Bruce Summerhays had his best week so far this season, tieing for sixth place in the TD Waterhouse Championship. PGA Tour member Mike Weir and Keith Clearwater managed to stay in the money for the week, finishing 58th and 66th respecively in the MasterCard Colonial. Meanwhile, the Carolina Courage's Maren Hendershot was again used as a substitute, this time coming in for 31 minutes.
