MSI: Washington National Delisted, Index Up on Rate Cut
NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- The bankruptcy filing by Washington National Group,
headed by LDS Church member Steven Hanks, led the New York Stock Exchange to
remove its listing from the market, and leaving investors without a place to
trade the essentially worthless shares. As a result Mormon News has also
removed the company from the Mormon Stock Index. However, two other
companies, Avista Corp., and SkyWest Airlines have been added to the index,
which rose nearly 4% last week because the Federal Reserve cut interest rates.
The rate cut led to large increases in Marriott Corp, AES and Cadence
Design, which helped the index rise 3.77% for the week. Overall, just 2
stocks on the index fell, Corvis Corp., which fell over 7% and Novell, which
fell nearly 6%. The largest increases last week were at Avista Corp.,
Hollywood Entertainment and Oakley, all of which rose more than 10% for the
week.
