LDS Church Announces Three More Temples in California

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced Friday that it will build three additional temples in California, bringing the total in the state to seven, the most in any US State outside of Utah. The announcement generated excitement among local members near Sacramento and near Redlands and Newport Beach, California, where the three temples will be built. The announcement also brought news articles in the Orange County Register, Los Angeles Times, and Sacramento Bee in addition to an Associated Press article that appeared in many other newspapers, especially in California.

The three temples will all be "small" temples, serving a total of about 188,000 members in the Sacramento area, Orange County, just to the south of Los Angeles, and the "Inland Empire," including San Bernardino and other areas east of Los Angeles. Other geographic areas with many temples include Mexico (13) and Utah (11).

Church members in these areas expressed excitement at the prospect of having temples nearby. "Not only will the temple generate excitement, but it's a great opportunity for many people who find it difficult to get into Los Angeles," said Doug Glauser, head of the church in the Redlands area. "I think it will have a unifying effect." Richard Porterfield, a Church member in Newport Beach, said the news left him speechless. "It's one of the most joyful days of my life," said Porterfield, 66, of Newport Beach. "If I were any happier, there would have to be two of me."

The exact location of the buildings hasn't been released, nor have the expected construction costs. Groundbreaking dates have also not been set, but with many of the smaller temples completed in just a year after a groundbreaking, these temples could be in operation as early as Fall 2002.
