BYU Working on Edwards Replacement, Eagles' Reid Declines Interview
Although BYU Athletic Director Val Hale's says that the school is concentrating on the current football season, he has also contacted several candidates and asked them to interview to replace retiring BYU football coach LaVell Edwards. But one of the possible candidates, the Philadelphia Eagles' Andy Reid, while acknowledging that BYU had contacted him, says he wasn't interviewed.

RM at UWisconsin to Sit Out Sunday Basketball Games
Ricky Bower, a freshman recruit on the University of Wisconsin's basketball team, will not play in the team's Sunday games, according to a report in yesterday's Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Bower, who missed two seasons while on an LDS mission in Poland, committed to the Badgers this past month, after making it clear to Badger coach Dick Bennett that he wouldn't play or practice on Sundays.

  LDS Volleyball Olympian Prepares
This article is a rather lengthy article about Ryan Millar, the youngest member of the US Olympic Volleyball Team. Ryan, showed up at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs last year with a list of impressive accomplishments which have helped him to bring enthusiasm and, more important, ability as the U.S. moved up several spots in the world rankings in a matter of months.

  BYU Football Scores Comeback Win
After ending the first half of its game against the University of Virginia Cavaliers down 21-0, the BYU Cougar football team roared back in the second half to tie the game 35-35 and then win on an Owen Pochman field goal in overtime. Looking more like the team their fans know, the Cougars made a case for the team, convincing the Salt Lake Tribune, at least, that they had a quarterback, an offense that can score touchdowns, and a defense. At least the first two were in doubt after last week's loss to Florida State.

LDS Wrestling Olympian's Family One of Many Struggling to Get to Sydney
After years of nurturing and encouraging young athletes, the families who sacrificed to make it all possible will find that there are others who are willing to sacrifice for them. Communities all across the nation have joined together in fund raising efforts to help support the many families of sons and daughters who will compete in the upcoming Sydney Australia Olympics.

Mormon News' Sports Stats Adds Sports, Athletes
Since the National Football League begins playing this weekend and with the approach of the Sydney Summer Olympic Games, Mormon News is expanding its coverage of Mormon athletes. This week we have added Olympics and Football players, and recognized a Mormon athlete who played in the WNBA. We plan on adding NBA players when that season begins later this fall.

BYU vs. Virginia Football Game Notes
After a season-opening loss against No. 2 Florida State (29-3) in the 11th annual Pigskin Classic on Aug. 26, BYU will travel back to the East Coast for a second straight week, taking on Virginia in the Cavaliers' season-opener. The Cougars will be making their first-ever appearance in Charlottesville. BYU head coach LaVell Edwards will be gunning for his first-ever win over UVA head coach George Welsh.
