BYU Working on Edwards Replacement, Eagles' Reid Declines Interview

PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA -- Although BYU Athletic Director Val Hale's says that the school is concentrating on the current football season, he has also contacted several candidates and asked them to interview to replace retiring BYU football coach LaVell Edwards. But one of the possible candidates, the Philadelphia Eagles' Andy Reid, while acknowledging that BYU had contacted him, says he wasn't interviewed.

Reid told the Philadelphia Daily News, "They did contact me," and then added, "They did not interview me." The Daily News says that he turned down the interview, preferring to stay in the NFL. But the Daily News did raise the possibility that Reid would change his mind, and while he didn't outright deny the possibility, he did say, "I don't think so, I think Gary's [Crowton] going to take the job." Reid is in the 2nd year of a five-year contract with the Eagles, and apparently wants the challenge of turning around the team, which, during the last three years, has won the fewest games of any NFL team.

Meanwhile, Hale told the Salt Lake Tribune that none of the overtures have progressed very far. "There has not been any formal discussion with any candidate," he said. "When I say 'formal discussion,' that doesn't mean I may have not called them and talked to them."

The Tribune makes clear that Hale has an affinity for Crowton. "I have known Gary Crowton for almost 30 years," he said. "Every year he comes, and we talk about the BYU job -- since he first got into coaching. If that type of conversation amounts to formal talks then, yeah, we've talked about it. We've talked about it many, many times, going back to the mid-80s."

In addition to Reid and Crowton, frequently mentioned candidates include Alabama assistant Charlie Stubbs, California Coach Tom Holmoe and the Cougars assistants Ken Schmidt and Lance Reynolds. Stubbs expressed strong interest in the job immediately after Edwards, and the Salt Lake Tribune says that he has already been interviewed for the position.
