Thursday, 02/12/99 Preliminary Report

Steve Finkelman, a local reporter, gave about a 10-minute report from about 17:35 - 17:45 on CBC Radio One Edmonton (740 AM), on the afternoon drive-home show, "Radio-Active" (hosted by Peter Brown) today. Fantastic piece -- he interviewed Elder Hugh Pinnock, Area President, and Donald Salmon, the new temple president, and also a local sister who helped in the interior work (unfortunately I didn't get her name). The only "mistake" made was they seemed to imply that all baptisms were performed in the temple, but they touched on sealings, briefly and superficially on the endowment, and the genealogy program. This all arose out of a media tour given last night (which I understand from our stake mission president was attended by about 1 000 people). They gave the dates and times of the open house and of the dedication, and mentioned that 40 000 members of the public were expected to tour the temple. Also mentioned was the long history of the Church in Alberta, and where other temples were. The reporter said it was kind of like being in a posh hotel -- lots of white and columns and gilt and sculpted carpets. He said he wouldn't call it ornate but said it was clear that only materials of the highest quality went into its construction. He also reminded the audience that by now probably everybody has seen the temple, even if they didn't know what it was, as it's highlighted by the "golden angel" that rises up over the Whitemud Freeway, a major commuter route [in fact, it's kind of like Washington DC, although not quite so spectacular, of course].
