QB's dream runs into competition
(Phoenix) AZ Republic 25Aug99 L3
By Richard Obert: Arizona Republic
In high school he played backup quarterback his whole career, although it
was to Joe Germaine (Ohio State). Now that he's back from his mission,
Griffin Goodman wants to get the backup job behind Ryan Kealy at Arizona
State University.
Although Goodman's stats at his Mesa, AZ high school were perfect (every
ball he threw went for a touchdown), they were sparse (he only threw one
pass). In a small college in eastern AZ he blew up all former passing
records, and was able to walk on to the ASU squad this last spring. As of
now he is in competition for the backup QB role with two other talented
athletes, John Leonard and Matt Cooper. However, since Kealy has been
known to have knee problems, the competition for the second stringer is
intense. Coach Snynder may not announce who actually gets the backup post
until the opener vs. Texas Tech.
The article mentions that Griffin served a mission in Paraguay. "The
missionaries there had no bicycles, no cars. So he walked. Long walks that
strengthened him mentally, physically and spiritually."
