Sept. 6-12 declared Alice Merrill Horne Week
FILLMORE, UTAH - On March 9, 1899, LDS Church member Alice Merrill
Horne successfully argued before the Utah State House of
Representatives for the creation of art collections at 35 schools
across the state. This legislation soon led to the creation of the
Utah Arts Council, the first state art agency in the United States.
To recognize the 100th anniversary of the founding of these arts
collections, Utah Governor Michael O. Leavitt has declared September
6 to 12th "Alice Merrill Horne Week." The week will be commemorated
with festivals in Fillmore, Utah's first capital.
Horne was one of the most significant women of her time in LDS
history, and is considered one of the 10 most significant women in
Utah history. In addition to her service with the Arts, Horne was a
member of the Relief Society General Board, a state legislator,
teacher, suffragette and activist for clean milk and fresh air.
