Assembly Hall Named
The LDS Church announced on Friday that the new assembly building
will be called the Conference Center. The 21,000-seat auditorium
under construction in downtown Salt Lake City occupies an entire
block north of Temple Square. It will be one of the largest-capacity
religious buildings in the world.
The Church still hopes to use the building for the April 2000 General
Conference in spite of damage to the building's roof and front wall
that occurred during the tornado that hit Salt Lake City on August
11th. The damage occurred when the boom of a crane collapsed on the
building.
