Handcart Polygamists?

Summarized by Kent Larsen

Handcart Polygamists?
Salt Lake Tribune 28Jul99 C9
By Paul Rolly and JoAnn Jacobsen-Wells: Salt Lake Tribune

Tribune reporters Rolly and Wells report that the LDS Church, sensitive to polygamy issues, changed the design of Stanley J. Watts' new sculpture, "Journey's End," which was installed last week in This is the Place Heritage Park in Salt Lake City. Afraid that the family depicted in the sculpture might appear to be polygamous, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve suggested the design change.

The current design includes, from left to right, an older daughter, mother, father, a younger daughter holding her father's hand, and a son. Evidently the original design had the older daughter next to the father. The family is kneeling in prayer, giving thanks for arriving safely in Utah after their trek across the plains.
