WASHINGTON -- A proposed $792 billion tax-cut has drawn the lobbying
efforts of the LDS Church along with a number of other tax-exempt
groups, in an effort to make sure the measure includes a $110 million
provision benefiting the for-profit entities of tax-exempt
organizations. The Church has joined a coalition that includes the
Children's Television Workshop, the PGA Tour and other generally
tax-exempt organizations.
The provision, which would cost the government $110 million over 10
years, seeks to relieve the tax-exempt organizations from a 1997
provision meant to curb abusive transactions between the tax-exempt
organizations and their for-profit subsidiaries. The coalition of
tax-exempt groups believes that the provision is this wide in error,
"The net was cast too broadly," said Daniel Victor, general counsel
for the Children's Television Workshop.
