Volunteers help bring elderly out of isolation

Summarized by Janus Wilkinson

Volunteers help bring elderly out of isolation
Deseret News 19Jun99 C8
By Elaine Jarvik: Deseret News special writer

Members of a group called Faith in Action, based in the Salt Lake Valley, help the elderly feel less isolated by visiting with them on a daily basis. The group is a coalition of 19 congregations in Salt lake, including 19 LDS wards.

Although the volunteers may help with small repairs or do some grocery shopping, their main role is that of "friendly visitor."

Kristi Johnson, director of LifeCare says, "There are many people, who during the course of a day, see only their Meals on Wheels driver. There are old people who call 911 just to have someone to chat with."
