President Kenneth Young Knight of the LDS Church's Canada Vancouver Mission
died on Saturday morning after battling colon cancer for six months.
President Knight had been released from service as a mission president
following his diagnosis last January. He was 72.
Knight was also the vice chairman of Sinclair Oil Corp. and Little America
Corp. After serving in the Army during World War II, Knight had obtained an
MBA from Stanford Business School in 1951. He had also worked with Hughes
Aircraft Co. in Los Angeles for 12 years and with Scope Industries for five
years. He worked with Sinclair Oil Corp.-Little America for 30 years until
retiring in January 1998 to serve as a mission president.
In 1998, at the time of Knight's retirement, President Gordon B. Hinckley
honored Knight while presenting to him the Salt Lake Area Chamber of
Commerce's "Giant in Our City" award. "Using that measure, Ken stands very
tall," Hinckley said. "He knows the pulse of the community. He measures
well before he leaps. There is nothing impetuous about him. He is quiet and
methodical. He has been a good friend to each of us," Hinckley added. "We
are all indebted to him."
