LDS Church member Gail Halvorsen, the "Candy Bomber" from Provo, Utah was
in Tirana, Albania last week to deliver school supplies, toys, and candy to
the children of an Albanian refugee camp. Halvorsen earned the nickname
"The Candy Bomber" fifty years ago when he first delivered candy to the
children of war-torn Berlin.
"I was amazed to find these children-who'd been sleeping out in the
open just a few weeks before, deprived of their homes-so upbeat. We have to
take a lesson from that," Halvorsen said. He said he was optimistic about the
help that the refugees are receiving, because he can see that people still
care. "Aid is help. . . it's hope ... without hope, the soul dies," he said.
