Report of Y. players leaving likely a rumor
Deseret News 21Jan99
By Dirk Facer: Deseret News sports writer

It has been rumored that non-member BYU black athletes, Mike Rigell, Kevon Morton and Michael Westbrook are planning to leave the BYU football program soon, though the players that were contacted, denied it.

At BYU, there has been some controversy following the honor code-related dismissal of star running back Ronney Jenkins and the suspension of starting cornerback Heshimu Robertson. The cornerstone issue is that 17 of the past 24 football players dismissed from BYU for honor code violations are black, and that issue has several athletes, coaches and administrators concerned. Some are suggesting a second chance standard for non-member athletes.

The Honor Code office insists that BYU is sensitive to such issues. BYU officials, meanwhile, have created a video explaining the school's honor code in detail. Recruiters will show the video to athletes when they make home visits. In an effort to address additional concerns, the school has also implemented a support group for minorities on campus.
