SAG to abide by Mormon deal
Hollywood Reporter: 4Jan99
The Screen Actors Guild has reached an agreement in principle
with an arm of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
for the production of church-related industrial and educational
films. An unusual -- but perfectly legal -- aspect of the
contract allows the production company to require non-Mormon
actors to sign agreements binding them "to live in accordance
with church standards during the production."
The two-year "experimental" deal has been approved by SAG's
board of directors, but must still be signed by SAG and church
officials. SAG board minutes show that one top SAG official
believes that the contract "will almost certainly constitute a
tremendous amount of work over a long period of time" --
especially in Utah, where the church is headquartered.
