Huntsman family splits support

Summarized by Kent Larsen

Reberg Consults Attorneys in Case His Job Was Improperly Eliminated
Salt Lake Tribune 10Jan99

The family of Mormon billionaire Jon Huntsman is split over who to support for the Republican nomination for president in 2000. Huntsman, who worked in the Nixon White House in 1971, hired Elizabeth Dole (then Hanford) and has been a good friend of Dole ever since. Huntsman will probably be on the committee exploring Dole's bid for the Presidency.

However, his son, Jon Huntsman, Jr., is a close friend of Texas Governor, George W. Bush. Jon Jr. was appointed ambassador to Singapore by Bush's father. He would also be the Utah director of Gov. Bush's campaign, if he wins the nomination.

Regardless of who wins the nomination, if a Republican is elected President, Jon Huntsman Jr., who is fluent in both Mandarin and Cantonese, would be a candidate for ambassador to China, according to recent speculation.
