Salt Palace: Do It Right And Pay the
Price

Because of an error interpreting a Federal geologic map, Salt Lake County
officials missed an active fault line that runs underneath the Salt Palace
in downtown Salt Lake City. The City discovered the fault when construction
on an expansion to the Salt Palace started last year, putting the expansion
on hold.
While geologists are sorting out the problem, the path of the fault remains
in question. As a result of the error, a number of downtown buildings have
been built or modified without the required investigation to see if they
are on the fault line. The buildings include the Salt Palace, the Rose
Wagner Performing Arts Center, Gateway Tower West, a parking garage and the
LDS Assembly Building.
