Mormon temple hits snag
Birmingham AL News: 7Jan99; page 1B

The LDS Church's staff in Salt Lake apparently got mixed up over the
Birmingham, Alabama Temple, and announced the groundbreaking last week
before the permits had been secured. President LeGrand Hutchison of the
Bessemer Stake announced on Monday that the groundbreaking would be held on
January 16th.
The announcement surprised officials of Indian Springs Village, where the
Temple will be located, because they had not yet received an application
for the building permit. And the Temple's architect reports that the
architectural plans are not even complete, nor has the ground been tested
to determine that the Temple can actually be built on the site.
"The church has gotten so excited about having the temple that they've
gotten ahead of the process," said Robert Waldrip, of Joyce, Prout and
Associates Architects in Huntsville, who are doing the architectural work.
"The cart has come before the horse, I'm afraid."
President Hutchinson says that officials in Salt Lake told him to announce
the groundbreaking, mistakenly believing that the permits had been obtained.
