MSI: Swift Transportation Added to MSI, Index Up 1%

NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- Mormon News subscriber Justin Warner reports that Swift Transportation CEO Jerry Moyes is an LDS Church member, leading Mormon News to add his company to the Mormon Stock Index. But while the index rose last week along with the Nasdaq, Swift Transportation fell more than 4%. The rise in the Mormon Stock Index was anything but uniform, however, as 13 stocks rose for the week, while 16 others fell.

Swift Transportation is a national truckload carrier operating throughout the continental US, built by combining strong regional carriers with a transcontinental van service. The company also has air operations, and Moyes is a part owner of the Phoenix Suns, Arizona Diamondbacks and Arizona Coyotes sports franchises.

The MSI's increase was due mainly to increases in Dell Computer, Cadence Design and Hollywood Entertainment, offset by a decline in AES Corp. EarthShell also rose strongly for the week, adding more than 20% to its stock price. But Computerized Thermal Imaging dropped more than 20%, while apparel maker Oakley dropped more than 10%.
