Mormon Businessman Elected Chairman of Billion-dollar Energy Company

SPOKANE, WASHINGTON -- Avista Corporation's board of directors has
named Gary G. Ely its chairman just six months after it named the
34-year company veteran President and CEO. Ely, who is Mormon, is a
graduate of Brigham Young University. He has also played a key role
in turning around two of the company's subsidiaries, returning them
to financial strength.
"Gary has repeatedly proven himself as an innovative and respected
leader. Gary has a long history of industry leadership, and he is
committed to our employees, our customers and our shareholders. He is
clearly the right person to lead Avista," said Larry A. Stanley,
Ely's predecessor as chairman of the board. Ely played a key role in
helping the financially troubled Avista Utilites, its traditional
regulated natural gas and electric utility, regain its financial
strength. He also led the financial turnaround at the company's
unregulated Avista Engergy unit, which trades and markets natural gas
and electricity throughout the Western US.
Since joining Avista Corp. in 1967, Ely has been involved in every
aspect of the business, from its engineering and operations to its
marketing and rate and regulatory relations.
Avista Corp. was added to Mormon News' Mormon Stock Index on Monday,
and will first appear in next week's listings. The company joins 26
other companies on the Index with Mormons in significant leadership
and executive positions. It is also the second energy company on the
Index.
