Sports: Clearwater Finally Makes a Cut, Knight Out of Playoffs

NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- After a dryspell that lasted four months, LDS golfer Keith Clearwater finally made a cut this past week, and earned his first PGA money of the season. Clearwater had entered eight events before finally making it into the money rounds in the COMPAQ Classic, ending this past weekend's match tied for 34th and earning nearly $19,000. Fellow PGA golfer's Jay Don Blake and Mike Weir, who had the best performances among Mormon golfers to date, both trailed Clearwater, Weir tieing for 61st, while Blake was cut.

In baseball, Wally Joyner has finally started hitting, connecting for 9 hits in 18 at bats for a .500 average for the week. Prior to last week, he was just 8 for 48 (.167). But in spite of the gush of hits, Joyner didn't manage to bat in a single runner. Among pitchers the standouts are relief pitchers Kyle Farnsworth and Mike Fetters, both of whom went through the week pitching three innings or more without giving up any runs. Their efforts leave Fetters with an extremely low 0.90 ERA over 10 inning and Farnsworth with a 1.59 ERA over 17 innings.

Meanwhile, the basketball season ended for the New York Knick's Travis Knight as the team was eliminated from the playoffs just as Knight finally got to play in one of the team's playoff games -- for just one minute. The other four players' teams all remain in the playoffs, but both Milwaukee's Mark Pope and the Laker's Mark Madsen seeing basically no playing time.

In the WUSA, the Carolina Courage's Maren Hendershot started and played in her second game of the season as the Courage lost their third game to the New York Power.
