Hatch Offers Bush Vice Presidency (Back From The Brinkmanship)
Washington Post p B01 12Dec99 N2
By Mary McGrory

PHOENIX, ARIZONA -- In the recent debate among Republican presidential candidates, front-runner George W. Bush proved far less nimble on his feet than LDS Church member Orrin Hatch, whose campaign languishes far behind Bush in both the polls and in fund raising. Hatch got the laugh of the evening at Bush's expense.

During the debate, Hatch boldly suggested that Bush could be his vice president, sparking "the laugh riot of the evening" according to Post columnist Mary McGrory. Bush was thoroughly unprepared for the bold suggestion, and couldn't come up with a rejoinder.
