Sports: Reid's Superbowl Effort Falls Short, Mormon Olympians Sought

NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- LDS professional football coach Andy Reid's effort to make the Superbowl fell short Sunday as the Philadelphia Eagles lost to the St. Louis Rams 29-24. The loss essentially ends the football season for all the remaining Mormon players, and leaves just basketball and hockey players in action as the 2002 Winter Olympic games approach. Mormon News is actively seeking to identify Mormons who will be competing in the games, and has so far identified one competitor.

With the loss, the Eagle's Chad Lewis also ended his season, managing to average better than 10 yards per pass during the season, and catching five passes for 53 yards during Sunday's game. In fact, one Mormon player, Brandon Manumaleuna of the St. Louis Rams, could see action in next Sunday's Super Bowl. But since he hasn't played during most of the regular season, it is unlikely that he will play on Sunday.

Mormon basketball players remained relatively idle. Doing best was Sacramento's Scot Pollard, who is still playing about 25 minutes of every game, but whose game was off a little last week. Shawn Bradley of the Dallas Mavericks has seen the biggest decline in playing time, making it on the court for just 15 minutes in two games last week, but he performed well during those few minutes. The Laker's Mark Madsen bucked the trend, getting more playing time than he's had in the past -- more than 15 minutes per game.

In hockey, the Minnesota Wild's Aaron Gavey earned an assist and six shots on goal during four games last week, better than Florida's Bill Lindsay, who didn't manage a single shot on goal or assist in three games last week. Brent Peterson, assistant coach for the Nashville Predators, saw his team lose three of four games, tying the other. Again offense was behind the losses, as the Predators' goalies gave up just five goals over four games.

Dan Forsman joined the action on the PGA tour last week, tieing for 40th place in the Phoenix Open, 20 spots ahead of fellow LDS golfer, Jay Don Blake.

We have also identified the following possible Mormon players, based on the 2001 Rosters:
