Sports: Injuries Plague Mormon Players; Veteran Punter Lee Johnson Returns

NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- Injuries plagued many Mormon professional athletes last week, leaving Shawn Bradley sidelined with a bad ankle, the Seahawk's Marcus Bell out with a neck injury and linebacker Rob Morris out with a bad knee. But veteran punter Lee Johnson, who was released by the New England Patriots October 15th after playing five games, was picked up by the Minnesota Vikings and kicked six punts for them in Sunday's game.

Bradley had a great game against Portland December 11th before he was injured, scoring 6 points in just 11 minutes on the court. He's listed as day-to-day, and has so far missed two games. The other bright light among basketball players was Mark Madsen, who played 13 minutes over two games, scoring five points. Travis Knight got a lot of playing time this past week, 54 minutes over 4 games, but wasn't able to capitalize on the playing time, scoring just 10 points with 9 rebounds -- something less than what he's done in the other 10 games he's played this year. Scot Pollard had a bad week, scoring just 10 points in 75 minutes on the court over 4 games, but managing 18 rebounds.

Punter Lee Johnson is now with his 5th team in a 17-year-long NFL career, and the move to the Vikings holds out the prospect of extending the career yet another season, unless he decides to retire. But after Johnson's return the biggest story among the Mormon NFL players is the injuries. In addition to Marcus Bell and Rob Morris, San Francisco Tight End Greg Clark has been out with a hamstring injury. The best performance for the week came from his team mate, Derek Smith, who made four tackles, including two solos, in the Forty-Niner's game against Miami.

Andy Reid extended his record to 9-4 Sunday with a win over the Washington Redskins. Amazingly, the Eagles have managed to build that record in spite of letting their opponents control the ball more than they did. Dave Campo's Dallas Cowboys, in contrast, have a 4-9 record.

In hockey, Mormon News noticed that the Washington Capital's Steve Konowalchuk is currently on the roster for the U.S. Olympic Hockey team. But that roster will need to be cut further, and since Konowalchuk is out with a shoulder injury, his participation seems doubtful. In golf, the season has ended, and all Mormon players have been idle for several weeks.
