Sports: NBA Starts, But Madsen Injured; Forsman Hits Top 5!

NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- The NBA's season began this past week, just as the delayed baseball season finally drew to a close, but two of the Mormon players in the league aren't on the court yet. Mark "Mad Dog" Madsen is out with an abdominal strain, while the New York Knick's Travis Knight is just spending a lot of time on the bench. Meanwhile, golfer Dan Forsman earned his first top 5 finish of the year, finishing 4th at the Southern Farm Bureau Classic to capture a purse in excess of $100,000 for the first time this year. The finish also vaulted Forsman to 114th on the money list, where, along with Jay Don Blake, he will get a spot on the tour for next year.

The three Mormons in the NBA who did play, Shawn Bradley, Scott Pollard and Mark Pope, performed in line with last year, with Pollard again leading the group, playing about half of each game and scoring 15 points for each 60 minutes on the court. Bradley played almost as much, but scored just 11 points for each hour on court. Pope trailed Bradley, with just 14 minutes per game and less than 6 points per hour.

In football, injuries, benchings and cuts have effectively reduced the number of active Mormon players to just nine. All three Mormon quarterbacks are now in backup roles. San Francisco's Tight End Greg Clark is out with a hamstring injury. And Lee Johnson, the 17-year veteran punter, was released by the New England Patriots, in a move that may finish his career. And with only Pro Bowl Tight End Chad Lewis and Linebacker Rob Morris having strong seasons, Mormon football players aren't all that interesting.

The situation is better among the coaches. Philadelphia Eagles Head Coach Andy Reid is leading his division (but with a 4-3 record) and Green Bay, where Mormon Darrell Bevell is an Offensive Assistant Coach, has a 5-2 record and is second in the NFC Central. Dallas Head Coach Dave Campo is having a much tougher time, with a 2-5 record that puts the Cowboy's last in the NFC East.

Steve Konowalchuk, one of two Mormons in the NHL, suffered a setback last week when a shoulder injury put him out for 3-4 months -- the majority of the season. This leaves just Aaron Gavey as the Mormon player active in the NHL.

Meanwhile, the PGA tour is drawing to a close, and both Jay Don Blake and Dan Forsman are poised to finish in the top 125 that get tour cards for next year. Keith Clearwater, meanwhile, is ranked 208th on the money list, forcing him to try to qualify for next year's tour in the killer PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament. He is playing this week in the Second Stage of the qualifiers that end's Friday. BUY.COM tour pro Richard Zokol finished that tour 13th on the money list, earning him a berth in the PGA tour next year, and Senior PGA tour pro Bruce Summerhays finished 20th, also earning a berth for next year.
