Sports: Sports Interlude -- Only Baseball and Golf in Season

NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- With the end of the WNBA and WUSA, only baseball and golf are in season, as we wait for the beginning of the professional football season and, later, hockey and basketball. But the San Francisco Giant's Jeff Kent had an off week, most Mormon pitchers were worse than usual, and three of the four Mormons playing in the PGA's Reno-Tahoe Open were cut.

Jeff Kent hit just .231 for the week, letting his season batting average drop below .300 again. But Kent did manage to hit two home runs during the week, leaving him with 18 for the year. Among starting pitchers, the best performance came from Roy Halliday, who gave up just one earned run over six innings against the Minnesota Twins. The Giant's Shawn Estes, on the other hand, had a disastrous three-inning outing against the Montreal Expos, giving up six runs in just three innings. Mike Fetters and Kyle Farnsworth led relief pitchers, with Farnsworth recording a 2.25 ERA over four innings, while Fetters blanked his opponents in 1 1/3rd innings during the week.

On the PGA Tour, four Mormon golfers, Jay Don Blake, Keith Clearwater, Dan Forsman and Mike Reid all entered the Reno-Tahoe Open, but only Forsman made the cut. However, he went on to tie for seventh in the tournament, his best performance of the year, and second top-ten finish. The rest of the Mormon golfers were idle during the week.

NFL

The NFL season begins September 9th. Exibition games for the NFL began several weeks ago. We expect to start our coverage of Mormons in the NFL next week.

CFL

The CFL season began June 20th. We still have identified only two Mormon players!

Wide receiver Ben Cahoon of the Montreal Alouettes is LDS, and Mormon News subscribers Diane Merten and Deryle Lonsdale have verified that Winnipeg Blue Bombers Linebacker Sefa O'Reilly is LDS.

While we are compiling a list of Mormon players in the CFL, that league doesn't make available player by player statistics.

We have also identified the following possible Mormon players, based on the 2001 Rosters:

Chris Ellison, Saskatchewan Rough Rid -- BYU Curtis Marsh, Saskatchewan Rough Rid -- Utah Omaar Morgan, Saskatchewan Rough Rid -- BYU Rob Hitchcock, Hamilton Tiger-Cats -- Weber State Trevor Shaw, Hamilton Tiger-Cats -- Weber State Kevin Alexander, Montreal Alouettes -- Utah State Darnell Arceneaux, Montreal Alouettes -- Utah Anthony Calvillo, Montreal Alouettes -- Utah State Josh Cochran, Montreal Alouettes -- Utah Neal Fort, Montreal Alouettes -- BYU Chad Folk, Toronto Argonauts -- Utah Profail Greer, Toronto Argonauts -- Utah State Errol Martin, Toronto Argonauts -- Utah Morgan Welch, Toronto Argonauts -- Weber State Brandon Dyson, Winnipeg Blue Bombers -- Utah State Moe Elewonibi, Winnipeg Blue Bombers -- BYU
