MSI: Subscribers Identify Two More Companies

NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- Mormon News subscribers have identified two more companies that belong on the Mormon Stock Index, increasing the number of companies to 31. But in spite of the additional participation, the index fell nearly 3%, much more than the Dow Jones Industrials, while other broader market indices increased. Two-thirds of the stocks on the MSI decreased, five by more than 10%.

Subscriber David M. DeLoach tells us that LDS Church member James U. Jensen is corporate counsel for pharmaceutical maker NPS Pharaceuticals, which discovers and develops prescription dugs. Meanwhile, subscriber David Pulley says that Cygnus, Inc. Chairman, President and CEO John C. Hodgman is an LDS Church member in the Saratoga California Stake. Cygnus develops and manufactures diagnostic medical devices, seeking to satisfy unmet medical needs with their proprietary technology. The company is best known for its GlucoWatch Biographer, which uses non-invasive technology to automatically measure blood glucose levels.

But the index fell as Cadence Design dropped nearly 9%, AES dropped more than 4% and Dell Computer dropped almost that much. The drop came in spite of a 3% rise in Marriott International. Huge drops of nearly 21% in Computerized Thermal Imaging, nearly 18% in Corvis and more than 10% in Hollywood Entertainment, Iomega and Micrel Semiconductor. None of the stocks on the index rose more than newcomer NPS Pharmeceuticals, which was up nearly 9%.
