Sports: Kent Blasts Three Homers

NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- LDS second baseman Jeff Kent hit three home runs last week to jump into the new baseball season in the same form he left it last Fall -- as an all-star and league MVP. Other Mormon players in the majors, however, didn't fare as well, nor did four of the five Mormon pro basketball players. The exception was Mark Madsen who had a strong week. Meanwhile, most Mormon golfers took the week off.

Kent's home runs left him with 7 RBIs for the six games played last week. Wally Joyner, on the other hand, managed just two hits in 14 at bats, a little worse than last week. Among the five Mormon pitchers, only the Giant's Shawn Estes pitched well, giving up just one run over six innings in his start against San Diego. Worse was Omar Olivares, who gave up seven earned runs in five innings for a 12.60 ERA in a start against Cincinnatti.

Meanwhile, in basketball, Mark Madsen scored 10 points in the 35 minutes that he played over three games, the equivalent of 17 points if he'd played a full game. Both Shawn Bradley and Scot Pollard were a little off their normal performance, Badley scoring 7 points per game and Pollard just 5 points per game.

In golf, Jay Don Blake and Bruce Summerhays were the only Mormon pros to play this past weekend. Blake tied for 71st in the Worldcom Classic on the PGA tour while Summerhays tied for 24th in the Countrywide Traditional on the Senior tour.
