Second Annual Missionary Memorial Horseback Ride in Honor of Those Who Made the Ultimate Sacrifice
LEHI, UTAH -- The Second Annual Parley P. Pratt Missionary Memorial
Horseback Ride will be held on Saturday, April 7th, 2001 at Harker
Canyon, south of Vernon, Utah and on the following day, Sunday, April
8th, at 7:00 PM in the Tabernacle at American Fork, Utah, a special
commemorative Missionary Memorial Fireside will be held with Elder
Marion D. Hanks, for those unable to participate in the trail ride.
Larry Walker, trail captain for the ride, and David Tuttle,
coordinator of the event, say that this ride will take place on land
where Porter Rockwell ran cattle and horses in the early days of Utah
history. All riders are invited to bring a sack lunch, a good horse,
and the determination to participate in a 2-4 hour ride, depending on
one's physical fitness and condition of his or her mount.
Riders will meet by 10:00 AM at the mouth of Harker Canyon. To get
there, take Highway 73 west out of Lehi , past Cedar Fort and
Fairfield to the Vernon turnoff, travelling about twelve miles past
Faust and the railroad tracks to Highway 36 and then south five miles
to Vernon. At the Silver Sage Cafe, turn west and follow the signs
south of town about eight miles. From Center and Main in Lehi it is
about 52 miles to the trail head.
Friends and family are invited to join in the ride and in a brief
commemorative service at Indian Rocks at the head of Harker Canyon
honoring LDS missionaries past and present who have died in the
mission field.
In the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,
those who have been called as missionaries have numbered in the
hundreds of thousands. Among that number are a select few who paid
the ultimate price for their commitment to the Restored Gospel.
In honor of those who died in the cause of the Master-in the
tradition of saints throughout the ages such as Paul the Apostle,
Peter and others of the Twelve as well as casualties to the truth in
these latter-days such as Joseph and Hyrum Smith, Parley P. Pratt and
many others-this commemorative horseback ride is organized to keep
bright the memories of those who gave their all.
In this year's ride, we honor all missionaries who have died or
suffered trauma as a result of accident or illness related to their
missions, in particular the following missionaries whose lives were
given during the past two years:

* Jared Mont Pulham, 20, Iowa Des Moines, Alpine, UT
* Bradly Alan Savage, 20, Iowa Des Moines, Lehi, UT
* Daniel Byrne Roundy, 19, Iowa Des Moines, Kaysville, UT
Parley P. Pratt Missionary Memorial Fireside
On Sunday 8 April, at 7:00 PM, a commemorative fireside will be held
in the Tabernacle at American Fork, featuring Elder Marion D. Hanks,
General Authority Emeritus, as keynote speaker. A Returned
Missionary Chorus will also perform arrangements of hymns penned by
Parley P. Pratt. All family and friends are invited to join in this
special fireside to honor missionaries of this dispensation. Anyone
interested in participating in the chorus is invited to call Bev
