Mormon Stock Index off Broadly

NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- Most stocks on the Mormon Stock Index declined last week as investors took a more critical look at the stocks in their portfolios. The index declined nearly 4 points (3%) while the Dow Jones Industrials fell less than 1% and the Nasdaq fell over 7%.

The few up stocks on the index managed anemic gains, with the exception of Computerized Thermal Imaging, the medical equipment company run by former US Air Force General Richard Secord and BYU graduate David Packer. Five mostly small stocks declined more than 10%, led by contact lens retailer 1-800-Contacts, which dropped nearly 20% after its earnings didn't meet expectations. Also down were EarthShell (14%), Fonix (14%), Micrel Semiconductor (12%) and Oakley, Inc. (10%).

But while Dell Computer was down less than 7%, it continued to drive the MSI, accounting for more than 1/3rd of the index's drop last week. Micrel Semiconductor and 1-800-Contacts also accounted for big portions of the decline.
