Two Utah Companies Added to Mormon Stock Index

NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- Two Utah companies with Mormon management have been added to the Mormon Stock Index, and two companies that had failed to meet the index's minimum capital requirement are back on the list, due to significant increases in their stock prices. Computerized Thermal Imaging (CTI) and JP Realty were added this week after research showed that members of their management team are Mormon. Additionally, the stock prices of Caldera Systems and Ten Fold have risen enough to put them back on the list. The changes bring the number of companies on the Mormon Stock Index to 24.

Computerized Thermal Imaging is a medical devices startup that is constructing a breast cancer detection system. Headed by former US Air Force General Richard Secord, an LDS Church member known most recently for serving as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, the company recently received FDA approval for the fourth of five modules needed for its system. Although its stock dropped by about one-third this past week, it is up more than 60% so far this year.

JP Realty is a commercial real estate trust that owns malls, community centers and other commercial and retail property in the western US. Several members of its management team are Mormon, including the company's CFO, M. Scott Collins. Its stock was up less than 3% for the week, capping a rise of 17% in 2001 so far.

For this past week the Mormon Stock Index fell slightly, by 0.5%, the first time the index has fallen this year. In addition to the 30% drop in CTI, both Dell and Corvis had significant drops, pushing the index down slightly after increases from Black &Decker, 1-800-Contacts, Iomega and Knight Transportation. Black and Decker's 8.5% rise was due to the company's announcement last week that it would cut 400 jobs (1.8% of its workforce. 1-800-Contacts' rise of nearly 15% came as investors eagerly awaited its quarterly earnings announcement tomorrow, expecting that the earnings will be larger than previously thought.

Mormon News' research confirms that there are probably other companies with Mormon management that we currently don't know about. Our research uncovered several Utah companies which may have Mormon executives, but which we were unable to confirm as of yet. If you have any confirming information about the following companies, please let me know: FX Energy, Gertner Communications, Headwaters, Inc., Nature's Sunshine, NPS Pharmaceuticals, Questar, SkyWest, Inc., Sonic Innovations.
