Mormon Stock Index Outperforms Market Again
NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- The Mormon Stock Index rose 6.6% last week, once again
outperforming the broader market indices. For the year, the index is up
nearly 19% so far this year, up 50% more than the NASDAQ composite's 12% and
far more than the S&P's 1.7%. Both the NYSE composite and the Dow Jones
Industrials are off so far this year.
The increase this past week was primarily due to Dell Computer, which rose
nearly 16%, both because tech stocks continue to rise and because sales
figures for the fourth quarter of last year, released last week, show that
Dell is doing better than other computer manufacturers.
But the increase wasn't only Dell. Also making large upward moves were fiber
optics equipment manufacturer Corvis, up 24% last week back to the top of
its pre-IPO estimate, automated translation software firm Fonix, up more
than 30% for the week, and 1-800-Contacts, up more than 14% for the week.
Overall, 11 of the 20 stocks in the index were up, five of them by more than
10%, while seven stocks were down, with only one of them, environmental
packaging firm Earthshell, falling more than 5%.
