Marriott Stocks Keep MSI From Year-end Dive

NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- Marriott Corp. and Host Marriott both rose in the last week of the year, keeping the Mormon Stock Index from falling in the last week of the year. Instead, the index rose by less than two-thirds of one percent. The index finished the year at 107.5025, a rise of 7.5% for the year.

Both Marriott and Host Marriott rose more than 5%, pushing the index up, while many of the high-tech stocks in the index fell, along with the NASDAQ. Novell and Dell Computer both fell for the week, exerting a heavy downward pressure on the index. Fiber-optic switch maker Corvis rose 10% for the week, also contributing toward the index' increase.

Two small stocks fell significantly for the week. Environmentally friendly packaging manufacturer EarthShell fell almost 37% while voice-over-Internet provider I-Link fell 40%, apparently as investors learned that Red Cube International failed to make the payments necessary to purchase a controlling interest in the firm. I-Link's CEO John Edwards also claimed that the firm failed to deliver the voice traffic expected.
