Myriad Genetics' Cancer Drug Purchase Lifts MSI

NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- Myriad Genetics' purchase of the rights to a potential cancer drug pushed its stock price up more than 35% for the week, contributing the most to a rise in the Mormon Stock Index for the week. Along with the broader NASDAQ's more than 10% rise, the MSI rose 5.5%, also helped by strong performances from Micrel Semiconductor, which rose nearly 40% and Corvis, which rose 26%.

Among down stocks, sunglass manufacturer Oakley, Inc. was off more than 20% after it confirmed that it will meet analyst expectations, rather than the higher numbers hoped for among investors. EarthShell was also down, again switching directions in what may be the most volatile stock in the index. Power company AES Corp. was also down, falling 6.65%, but the company has had good news since last week, as it was able to restart parts of California power plants shuttered for environmental concerns.

Hollywood Entertainment was the biggest mover for the week, gaining more than 50%, all of what it lost last week and then some. The troubled chain of video stores made a large payment on its debt, satisfying a major loan covenant and in the process satisfying investors that it is sound.
