High Tech Stocks Push Up Mormon Stock Index
NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- Led by high tech stocks rising with the general US
stock market, the Mormon Stock Index surged by 5 1/2% to close at 145.33, a
new high for the year. The index was led by a resurging Caldera Systems,
which finally joined other Lynux operating system vendors in recovering
after sliding for most of the year. Caldera jumped 47% for the week.
Other high tech stocks also rose. Disk-drive and digital storage company
Iomega was up nearly 30% for the week and 1-800-Contacts rose 26%. The
largest of the high tech stocks, Dell, Novell and newcomer Corvis, were also
up more than 10% as was bio-tech firm Myriad Genetics.
While half the stocks in the index were down, only 3 mostly smaller stocks
were down by more than 5%.
