Joyner Hits 2000th Career Hit, Kent back in RBI race

NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- The Atlanta Braves' Wally Joyner followed up his 200th career homer with his 2,000th career hit this past week. The 15-year veteran is the 213th player to reach the 2,000 career hits mark. But Joyner was again relgated to backup 1st baseman this week as the Brave's Andres Gallaraga returned from the disabled list. Meanwhile, Giant's second baseman Jeff Kent, like Joyner an LDS Church member, bounced back from a post-All-Star game slump and got 12 hits in 23 at bats (.522) in the first six days of August. He hit two home runs and collected 9 RBIs during those games, bringing Kent's season total to 98, second place and just 3 behind Chicago's Sammy Sosa's National League-leading total and just 5 behind the major league-leading total of Seattle's Edgar Martinez. Cardinal Pitcher Garrett Stephenson also fared better this week, getting a complete-game shut-out of the Atlanta Braves. While relief pitcher Mike Fetters had a mixed week, winning one game and loosing another, while managing a mediocre 5.40 ERA. In golf, PGA tour members Mike Reid and Mike Weir both landed in the money in The International tournament, Weir finishing 19th and Reid 24th. And Senior tour member Bruce Summerhays finished 17th in the Coldwell Banker Burnet Classic.
