Mormon Stock Index Drops Slightly In Volatile Market
Kent Larsen 18Jul00 B4

NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- The performance of the stocks in the Mormon Stock Index varied widely in the week ended July 14th as 1-800 Contacts and Micrel Semiconductor jumped more than 10 and nearly 20% while Caldera Systems and Ten Fold dropped 19 and 35% amid the release of several company earnings reports. The index itself managed to stay relatively stable, dropping just 1/2 percent to 129.85, from 130.54.

Draper, Utah based Ten Fold led the down stocks, as well as the NASDAQ, with a shocking drop of 35% after the company announced it would post a loss for the 2nd quarter, instead of the expected profit. Officials of the e-business software firm blamed the loss on higher costs, project delays and a longer than expected sales cycle. Caldera Systems also suffered a large drop of nearly 20% due mainly to investor fears that the increasing competition in the Linux market would reduce its prospects.

Meanwhile, 1-800 Contacts reported record 2nd Quarter profits, leading its stock price to rise nearly 12% and the stock price of chip maker Micrel rose nearly 20% as it also reported a profitable quarter, remaining the only chip maker to report profits every quarter for the past two years. Analysts upgraded their recommendations for Micrel, leading its stock to jump.
