LDS Scout Honored For Saving Scout Leader
Salt Lake Tribune 23Feb00 P2
By Michael Vigh: Salt Lake Tribune

PROVO, UTAH -- LDS Scout Jonathan L. Payne will be honored doday by the Utah Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge for his life-saving heroics last year when he saved his scout leader from drowning in the Green River. Payne will receive an award from the foundation at a ceremony at the Little American hotel in downtown Salt Lake City. He is then scheduled to enter the LDS Church's mission training center later today.

Payne earned the recognition when he dove into the rapids of the Green River to save a scout leader who had fallen into the river and was pinned underwater against the rocks. For his heroism, Payne had previously received the highest lifesaving award from the Boy Scouts of America.

The foundation will also recognize three others for their heroism at today's ceremony. The awards will be given out by Elder M. Russell Ballard of the LDS Church's Quorum of the Twelve.
