LDS Author Releases Special Winter Games Edition of 'A World of Faith'

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- Just off the press, a commemorative Winter Games 2002 book celebrates the diversity of faiths in Utah and around the world. "A WORLD OF FAITH: World Celebration Special Edition", from Signature Books, is published in partnership with the Interfaith Roundtable of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee (SLOC).

With text by Salt Lake Tribune writer Peggy Fletcher Stack and elaborate, colorful illustrations by Utah artist Kathleen Peterson, the volume pays tribute to diversity. The book also carries an Olympic message of peace to the world from the SLOC Interfaith Roundtable.

To launch the book, a book signing and discussion will be held Thursday, December 13, 2001, from 5 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at the new Barnes and Noble bookstore in the Gateway Center. Celebrating the book's debut will be the author Peggy Stack, illustrator Kathleen Peterson, and Jan Saeed, chair of the SLOC Interfaith Roundtable. All will be available to answer questions and sign books.

The preface to this special edition begins, "Light the Fire Within," the theme of the Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City. The book features the Golden Rule as taught in ten different faith traditions and information about twenty-eight different faiths, described in both words and art.

"The concise, descriptive text and beautiful illustrations of A World of Faith provide an informative and entertaining resource to help children-and adults-understand the diversity as well as the similarity of the world's religions" writes Jimmy Carter, 39th president of the United States, for the book's cover.

The author adds that "organized religion has inspired the best in human history: new and often revolutionary social teachings about justice. It has also spawned the worst depravity, cruelty, forced conversion, and war. The best hope to end such conflict in the name of religion is increased knowledge of the various traditions and what they have in common."

The Interfaith Roundtable concurs: "As we prepare to help welcome the world to the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, we see an opportunity to increase appreciation for the diversity and beauty of the global human family ... It is a time of international truce when people put aside their differences ... The Olympic Winter Games are an opportunity to experience the global community in a context of peace. We hope this book will help readers find an increased desire to build a more peace-filled society."

What is the SLOC Interfaith Roundtable?

In 1998, members of various faith communities were invited by the Salt Lake Organizing Committee to form an Interfaith Roundtable to support the Salt Lake Winter Games of 2002. The mission of the Roundtable is to help the faith communities work together to welcome and serve the athletes and visitors to the 2002 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games along with establishing a lasting legacy following the Games. An Interfaith Evening of Music, the Chaplaincy program at the Athletes Village, a directory of Faith Services during the Winter Games along with a web site of history of faith communities in Utah, and this book project have been major components of the roundtables activities. The Roundtable unites over 60 representatives from 40 faiths in greater Salt Lake Area, including: Assemblies of God, Baha'i, Baptist , Buddhist, Christian Science, Reformed Christian, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Congregational Church, Church of Christ, Episcopal, Gnostic, Islamic Society, Interfaith organizations, Jewish, Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian, Quaker, Roman Catholic, Seventh-Day Adventist , Southern Baptist, Salvation Army and Unitarian faiths. "A WORLD OF FAITH" is their first project to be launched. According to Jan Saeed, Roundtable Chair, "We hope this book will not only be a beautiful keepsake but also a useful tool for all those who wish to become more prepared in welcoming the world for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games."

"A WORLD OF FAITH", Olympics Edition, $24.95, ISBN 1-56085-162-7, by Peggy Fletcher Stack and Kathleen Peterson. Available at all Wasatch Front area bookstores as well as on-line booksellers and at http://www.signaturebooks.com/world2.htm .
