Sports: Additional Golfer Identified, Clearwater Out of PGA Tour
NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- Mormon News has identified an additional Mormon
golfer, Dean Wilson, who plays on the Japanese PGA tour, and is
currently ranked 70 in the World Golf Rankings, the only Mormon
golfer so ranked. Subscriber Brent Romney also noticed that Mormon
football player Byron Frisch is back on the field, after the Dallas
Cowboys picked him up in late September. But the week also brought
news that Keith Clearwater failed to make the next round of the PGA
qualifying tour, putting him off the tour next year.
Wilson has been winning consistently in Japan, capturing three
tournaments and finishing in the top 15 in half the tournaments he
entered there. This past week he was the only Mormon golfer in a
tournament (except Clearwater) and tied for 5th place in Japan's
Phoenix tournament.
In the NBA, the Knicks' Travis Knight finally got to play, but only
for about 6 minutes in two separate games. Again, Scott Pollard led
the Mormon players, scoring 24 points over four games.
Football standouts last week included the Cleveland Browns' Brant
Boyer, who was credited with eight tackles in the Browns' game last
week, six of them solo. Among coaches, Andy Reid improved to 5-3 and
the Green Bay Packers, with Offensive Assistant coach Darrell Bevell,
advanced to 6-2.
And in Hockey, Aaron Garvey had an off week, managing five shots on
goal, but no goals. Assistant Coach Brent Peterson's Nashville
Predators kept to just 8 penalties in two games last week, while
giving up 6 goals in 43 shots on goals by opponents.

The regular season has ended, and only one Mormon baseball player was in the playoffs last week. However, the St. Louis Cardinals, Dave Veres' team, was eliminated this week in the playoffs, ending our coverage of baseball for this season.
