MSI: AES Limits MSI Gain to Less than Market

NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- A nearly 10% decline in power company AES Corp. limited the gain in the Mormon Stock Index to less than that of the popular Dow Jones Industrials and NASDAQ indices. The MSI rose 2.93 (2.5%) while the Dow Jones Industrials rose 2.8% and the NASDAQ rose 4%.

Dell Computer's 9% gain accounted for much of the index's increase last week, but it wasn't the largest increase for the week. Knight Transportation was up 18%, after it corrected a report in the Wall Street Journal that Chairman and CEO Kevin Knight had sold nearly 200,000 shares in the company. Knight had only sold 25,000 shares as part of a normal diversification program. Also up was Knight's competitor Swift Transportation (16%) and Oakley (16%), which recently trumpeted its successful diversification into shoes and other clothing in addition to its traditional eyewear.

On the downside, Myriad Genetics fell 11%, along with other biotech stocks, and 1-800-Contacts also fell 11%. Overall 18 stocks in the index were up while 14 fell last week.
