While Republican Are Weaker, Hatch May Have Larger Role
Regardless of how the presidential race is resolved, the US Republican party will be weaker in the US Senate because of its slim majority. At best, Republicans will have a 2 seat margin with which to run the Senate. But even in this closely-divided situation, Utah Republican Orrin Hatch, an LDS Church member, will likely wield significant power, and may have a crucial role.

LDS Senator Harry Reid Advocates High-Speed Trains
A commentary in the Chicago Tribune mentions the role of Nevada Senator Harry Reid, an LDS Church member, in advocating high-speed trains as an alternative to air travel. Reid, who travels a lot between Nevada and Washington DC, is annoyed at flight delays, crowded airports and jammed highways. He sees high-speed trains as a way of relieving the congestion.

LDS Lawmaker Works For Internet Filtering
Rep. Ernest Istook, R-Oklahoma is the House sponsor of the Internet filtering provision that will provide money for the Labor-HHS bill that will enable schools and libraries to pay for needed Internet filters. Istook, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, believes that although parents can buy filtering systems for home computers it is the responsibility of the government to help pay for the cost to schools and libraries. "When our tax money is used to provide Internet access, it must also protect our children from obscenity," Istook said.
