LDS Bishop Excommunicated, Indicted on Sexual Abuse Charges

HYRUM, UTAH -- An Associated Press report in today's Salt Lake
Tribune says that a now-excommunicated LDS Bishop has been indicted
for sexual abuse of a 17-year-old girl. The indictment alleges that
Gordon Brent Bodily of Hyrum, Utah lured the girl from North Carolina
to Salt Lake City, according to the indictment filed in federal court
on Wednesday.
Because the story is available through the Associated Press, it could
be carried in thousands of newspapers worldwide. However, it has so
far had limited distribution.
Bodily was still a Bishop when the alleged incident occurred. He was
also a 14-year veteran Physical Education teacher at the South Cache
Center. Because of the charges, Bodily was suspended from his
teaching position.
An LDS Church Spokeswoman reported that Bodily has been released and
excommunicated. "Because of his violation of his sacred trust, Bishop
Gordon Bodily was released from his position . . . and has been
excommunicated from the church."
