Missionary Dies in Ukraine Accident
(Mormon Missionary Dies in Ukraine From Head Injuries Resulting From Fall)
Salt Lake Tribune 16Jul00 N1

DONETSK, UKRAINE -- LDS missionary Elder Clark Henry Pixton of Logan, Utah died Friday following injuries sustained in a July 5th fall. Elder Pixton, believed to be 20 years old, had served in the Ukraine Donetsk Mission for 17 months. The missionary failed to regain consciousness following surgery.

Pixton is at least the eighth LDS missionary to die accidentally so far this year, according to reports carried in Mormon News. The most widely known of these accidents was the car accident that took the lives of four LDS missionaries in Iowa in February. A sister missionary serving in South Carolina was killed in a traffic accident just a week before that. In April, an LDS missionary was killed in Argentina in a traffic accident, and most recently, an Elder who had left the Provo Missionary Training Center was killed while walking on a highway access road.

However, the death rate among missionaries is still much lower than that among similar young adults in the United States.
