Mormon youths spruce up schools in Dorchester 2
Charleston SC Post & Courier 14Jul00 D1
By KaSandra Mitchell: The Post and Courier staff

SUMMERVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA -- As part of their annual Youth Conference, 350 LDS youths spent Thursday in service projects, sprucing up Elementary, Middle and High Schools in Dorchester county, South Carolina. The youth worked at a total of eight schools during the day.

"It's awesome to see these kids spending their summer quality time to do service projects in this 100-degree weather," said Sumerville Police Department Cpl. Robert Ard. Stan Yarborough, director of facilities for the Dorchester 2 school district, agreed, but added that finding projects for that many youth was difficult. The youth helped at Spann Elementary, Knightsville Elementary, Windsor Elementary, Gregg Middle, Alston Middle, Dubois Middle, Fort Dorchester High and Summerville High schools.

At Summerville High School they removed bushes from a wall the district plans to tear down for an expansion, and replanted them elsewhere. At the other schools, students painted, scraped and cleaned the schools.

The Youth Conference continues today and tomorrow as the teens participate in seminars and meetings. "It's a lot of fun, and you meet new friends that have the same beliefs as you do," said 15 year-old Marlyse Kneisly of Greenville. Conference participants from out of town were housed with local church members.
